Well the end of the summer is almost here… what summer? I hear you say. I guess in comparison to the last couple of years it’s not been so bad. At least our personal possessions were not floating down the road. Although we did have a waterfall coming through the roof of an area of the building that our office is located in earlier this month!

Before I go any further in this issue I would like to take the time to thank the members who have contributed heavily to the GHB community in the forum. Your efforts in helping new users and creating spreadsheets do not go unnoticed. We are really building up quite a friendly atmosphere there if you haven’t taken the time to check it out please do so.

Ok down to business….

August has been a busy month as always, we have just released version 3.6 which Malcolm has kindly filled you all in about above. There are some quite handy updates there that are well worth taking a look at. Most of these have been requested by you. Sometimes not all of the updates that are requested make it into the latest versions but they are not discarded and reassessed before each development cycle.

Instead of a settings corner this issue I have some notifications for you… As I am currently testing several new ideas have no fear settings corner will return next issue.

Running GHB on a remote server

After writing to you about this in the previous issue we had an overwhelming level of responses from you and I am pleased to say that we have come up with the most cost effective solution for you to make use of this type of service.

I spent quite some time testing various different solutions including hosting the remote desktops ourselves however this proved to be quite resource intensive and was also the most expensive solution in terms of GHB subscription versus cost of remote service.

I also spent 2 weeks testing services from external providers. This I found was a much better (and cheaper) option.

So in conclusion we would like to pass on the details of a UK company whom we found gave us the most secure, reliable and value for money service. Here is a link that you can use to sign up

http://tracker.tagadab.com/track/click/?ad=bluebell&lp=/virtual-private-servers&var=1&aid=1&soc=content

The link above will take you to a company called tagadab who are part of the clara.net cloud of companies. Their servers are all based in UK datacentres with full support.

The package that we tested and confirm to work well is below

VS500 Windows

512mb RAM

20 GB HDD

1000 GB data transfer monthly

You can opt to have windows server 2003 or 2008, we used windows 2008 however the bot will run on either.

GHB Betdaq

Over the past few months we have been encountering various problems developing against the betdaq API (Application programming interface) – This is the background source for which all bots interact with the market data.

Betdaq have been making numerous changes to their API commands which have caused some functions in the GHB betdaq bot to stop working or not work correctly. We have been working to adapt to these changes “on the fly” over the past 2 releases however have encountered 2 major issues when developing version 3.6 that have caused us major issues trying to work around.

1) Inferred winner function

This is the feature that allows the bot to settle the PL of a race without having to wait for the exchange to settle the bet, which when betting on horses can be up to 15 minutes.

Inferred winner will not work with GHB betdaq 3.6 due to a significant difference in the way that the betdaq API handles the in running markets. It prevents the bot from accurately predicting the winner based on the odds at suspension.

2) Greyhound markets

Some of you have already emailed us about this; I have spent the past week investigating the issue whereby only half of the days greyhound markets seem to be available to load in the morning.

After discussing this with betdaq operations director he informed me that this is a change that they have made in an attempt to make the greyhound markets more fluid... They are loading the markets from 11am – 2pm first thing in the morning and the loading the afternoons markets at around 1:30pm daily. I explained at length to him the problems that this caused for bot users and to a certain degree I think he understood me! However he has said that they will not be changing the way that this appears on the website but can allow us access to the markets through the API and one of his programmers will be assisting us with this area.

These are just 2 of the issues that we have faced recently, there are others which have been reported through the helpdesk and picked up in testing that we have fixed in v 3.6.

However in light of the increasing volume of work that is becoming apparent with the betdaq API we have taken the decision to cease development of GHB betdaq from version 3.6 onwards. We will tie up any current issues that we can and of course continue to support version 3.6 for betdaq but there will be no more features added to the betdaq bot.

Well that just about concludes my article for this month, once again I do apologise for the lack of settings corner, it will return next issue.

I hope that you all enjoy version GHB version 3.6. As always feature requests are welcome via the usual channels which are below.
